It was an intense day for those of us who lived on the West Kootenai. The day the Caribou Fire swept down into our community. Pre-evacuation orders had been issued. Everything about the day had an urgency to it.
The wall of fire sweeping down Mt. Marius was pushed by high gusts of wind. The fire would roll and jump ahead of itself, shooting flames a couple hundred feet high above the tree line. Huge billows of smoke made a stark line against the clear blue sky of our western mountains. Then there was the voice of the fire - that low, dull roar in the distance. The voice grew louder as the day wore on. When we felt the wind in our faces, we knew that boiling, angry fire was coming right at us. With the fire line being a couple of miles long, there was no escape to be seen.
That fire was coming HERE. Time was fast running to get our families and a few of our belongings out of its wide path of destruction.
Living in the intensity of the day, it was difficult to pray beyond the quick, short prayers of crying out. "Help us, Lord!", "Show us what to do!" "Strengthen me!", "Protect us!"
At a time of need like this, we have assurance that our Lord is carrying us. Because we have a personal relationship with Him, His Presence is there. He is comforting, guiding, and giving Grace for the moment.
This is the story of a few of the lives and moments of those who lived through this fire and the rebuilding afterwards. An account of how God was faithful through the moments and days of challenge.
